MyChron 6 vs Alfano 7: Which New Kart Data Logger Should You Buy?

The MyChron 6 and Alfano 7 are closer than any two rival kart loggers have ever been: both sample GPS at 25 Hz, both record the channels that find lap time, and both come in 1T and 2T versions. So the decision falls to the things around the data. The Alfano 7 wins on battery life (roughly 40 hours to the MyChron’s 20). The MyChron 6 wins on ecosystem if your paddock runs AiM, which is most of North America. As with every generation before them: buy the brand your paddock and dealer support, and you will not regret it.

Both companies shipped their new flagships recently, so plenty of karters are choosing between them right now, either buying a first logger or replacing an older unit. Here is how they actually stack up, and what should decide it.

Which has better data?

For lap analysis, they are effectively even, and that is new. Previous generations gave AiM a GPS-rate argument; now both log position 25 times per second, which is enough to draw an accurate track map, a clean racing line, and sharp braking and cornering zones from the accelerometers. Both record the channels that actually decide lap time. The spec sheets diverge on peak sampling rates for specialist channels, but for the speed trace, minimum corner speeds, and sector deltas you will actually use, neither logger will show you something the other misses. The real differences

  • Battery. Alfano quotes roughly 40 hours; AiM quotes about 20. Twenty hours already covers multiple race weekends, but if you hate charging things, the Alfano roughly doubles it. The MyChron counters with USB-C, so it charges from the same cable as everything else in your trailer.
  • Software workflow.AiM’s Race Studio 3 is Windows desktop software with deep manual control, plus the newer RS3 mobile app. Alfano’s ADA leans more app-first. Upgrading from an older unit?

If you run an original 10 Hz MyChron 5, either new logger is a real data upgrade; if you run a 25 Hz MyChron 5S 2 or an Alfano 6, neither is. Do you have to pick a side?

For the hardware, yes. For the analysis, no.
